About the Book:

When young Galveston Gazette society reporter Jazz Cross hears rumors of grave robbers at the Broadway Cemetery, she and photographer Nathan Blaine investigate, hoping to land a scoop. The newshawks witness meetings held by clandestine gangs, and enlist her beau, Prohibition Agent James Burton, to help capture the elusive gangsters red-handed.

Meanwhile, the supernatural craze takes Galveston by storm, and Jazz is assigned to profile the society set’s favorite fortune teller, Madame Farushka.  Sightings of a ghost bride haunting the Hotel Galvez intrigue Jazz, who sets up a Ouija board reading and séance with the spiritualist. Did the bride-to-be drown herself—or was she murdered?
Luckily, Sammy Cook, her black-sheep half-brother, has escaped the Downtown Gang and now works at the Hollywood Dinner Club, a swanky nightclub owned by rival Beach Gang leaders. During a booze bust, Downtown Gang leader Johnny Jack Nounes is caught and Jazz  worries: will Sammy be forced to testify against his former boss?

Worse, when a mystery man turns up dead, Sammy is framed for murder and Jazz must find the real killer and clear Sammy’s name. As turf wars between rival gangs rage on, Jazz relies on her wits and moxie to solve both murders before the Downtown Gang exacts its revenge.

The plump gypsy woman caressed my hand, studying my palm as if it held the map to Lafitte’s pirate treasure, rumored to be lost in Galveston Bay. Madame Farushka certainly looked the part in her colorful scarf, flowing hair, a fringed shawl wrapped over her peasant blouse and skirt. Was she an actress or a clairvoyant or a fake?

Flickering candles dotted the dimly-lit room, strands of sparkling beads and crystals criss-crossed the windows, the scent of sandalwood floated from an Egyptian bronze incense burner. A crystal ball gleamed in the center of the table, beckoning like a jewel from King Tut’s tomb.
The fortune-teller cleared her throat. “You face a lot of struggles as a working woman, with many challenges ahead.”
I bit my tongue to keep from blurting out: So what else is new? Every dame I knew had problems.
“I see a lot of changes in your life,” the seer chanted, gazing into the crystal ball.  “Upheaval, uprooting.” She closed her eyes, swaying from side to side. Suddenly her dark eyes flew open and she looked up in alarm. “Someone close to you is in danger. Are you married?” Her kohl-rimmed gaze bore into my skull, as if reading my mind, daring me to reveal my secrets.  Wouldn’t she already know them if she truly was clairvoyant?
I shifted in her silk slipper chair, tapping my fingers. “No, why?”
“A loved one then, perhaps a sweetheart or a family member. A young man. He’s in grave danger.” Madame Farushka gripped my hand, her voice a hoarse gasp. I tried not to be fazed by her theatrics, but I admit I was worried.
“What kind of danger?”
She peered into the crystal ball. “Terrible danger. Life or death.”
“Can you be more specific?”
“I’m sorry, but that’s all I foresee.”
OK, so now I was curious.  “What does the man look like?”
She stroked her temples, rings of gold bracelets jingling on her arms. “He’s tall, handsome, young...with a dangerous occupation.”
That described my two favorite fellas: my fair-haired Prohibition agent beau, James Burton and Sammy Cook, my black-sheep half-brother. Sammy served as maître d’ of the Hollywood Dinner Club, the swankiest spot on the Gulf Coast.
“Is he blond or dark?”
The seer shook her head. “I’m sorry. I lost the vision.”
In other words, my dollar was all used up.
What a load of hogwash. Sadly their risky jobs always put Sammy and James  in danger. This phony-baloney hadn’t told me anything new.
“Is that all?” I stood up, annoyed that I’d wasted a whole dollar on ten minutes of trivia.
“You’ll have to come back for a second reading.” She held out her palm, fishing for a tip. When I gave her a nickel, she scowled, as disappointed as I was. Now I wondered: Was she a fortune-teller or a fortune-hunter?

Formerly Collier has worked as a magazine editor, a substitute teacher, a community newspaper reporter and in advertising/marketing as well as public relations. During college, she once worked as the world's worst cocktail waitress, against her mother's wishes. She graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a degree in Magazine Journalism, and served as president of WICI (Women in Communications, Inc.) and as an editor on UTmost, the UT Magazine, her senior year. FLAPPERS, FLASKS AND FOUL PLAY is the first novel in her Jazz Age mystery series, followed by BATHING BEAUTIES, BOOZE AND BULLETS, GOLD DIGGERS, GAMBLERS AND GUNS, VAMPS, VILLAINS AND VAUDEVILLE and DECO DAMES, DEMON RUM AND DEATH.

"After a “gangster tour” in Chicago where we visited Al Capone’s old stomping grounds, I found out Galveston had its own share of turf wars between rival gangs and bootleggers. I had no idea this sleepy beach town had such a wild and colorful past, and became fascinated by the legends and stories of the 1920s."

2018 RECAP: WHAT'S UP WITH ME and END OF THE 2018 AUTHOR PROGRAM!

Here's a post that I can't believe I'm writing, because it means that the end of 2018 is already here! How can that be? How has the year gone by so quickly? I suppose that, for me at least, it has something to do with being busy, busy, busy. Running to and fro and cooking a bun in my oven has kept me on my toes this year, and it seems as if half the year was lost in a blur as I was dealing with severe morning sickness (it seriously lasted 24/7) until my seventh month! (It was the worst, guys, but I'll supposedly have a cute little prize at the end of the this journey, and I am adequately prepared for it, judging by the endless piles of outfits and bows in my nursery!)

Today's posting signifies not just the end of 2018, but the end of an incredibly busy and epic author program! From January to December, I have featured a new author or creative mind almost every single week (excluding holidays!). WOW. Sign-ups for the program were off the charts, and I'll be starting a new 2019 author program for next year, too! I'm already booked through March, so if you'd like to get on Writing Belle starting in April, HIT ME UP. Seriously. DO IT. NOW. Working with and featuring other writers is one of my all-time favorite things to do. EVER. Don't be shy!

So what's next for me? Now that 2018 is coming to a close (Christmas is right around the corner, and I'm nowhere near prepared!), what will 2019 hold for Writing Belle, for my book series, for Cassidy Hart, for Summer Lane, and for all the rest? Allow me to shed some light on the subject!

When is the next Resurrection book coming out?
I typically release Cassidy Hart books every six months, in June and January. This year, due to my pregnancy, I released the third installment of the series in December. I am still going to do my best to get the 4th installment out next summer, although I'll have a newborn to keep me busy, too!

The 2019 Author Program?
Yes! It's happening! I'm already booked all the way through March 2019, so like I said above, I'm looking for authors/editors/artists/bloggers to feature starting in April. Remember that you have to sign up NOW to get a spot LATER. I love books, guest posts, how-to articles, crafty step--by-steps, and people who just like to chat about writing and storytelling in general. 2018 was a phenomenal year for Writing Belle in terms of author interaction and readership, so I plan on keeping that ship sailing right along into the next year!

Any other books in the works?
I would love, love, love to  be able to get a romance novel out in the spring. Lord willing and the creek don't rise, I'll be releasing a lovey-dovey book for women, and I'm not going to put a release date on it yet because I simply have no idea how long it will take me to adjust to being a mommy! I will say this: the book will be contemporary, and it will be set on the California Central Coast, with a focus on the San Luis Obispo area. I will be releasing the book with a pen name, Ellen Brandt.

When will the 2019 Author Program actually begin?
The program will actually kick off in February. I am not officially coming back to work until March, but I'll be able to do some blogging from my postpartum perch (I have cleverly made sure that I have an epic, cushy couch in my babe's nursery).

What else is new (or will be new)?
Okay, so my wish is for Writing Belle and Writing Belle Publishing to continue as normal! I will be unavailable for the duration of Christmas all the way through January, but urgent inquiries will be redirected if necessary.

I want to wish all of you a very Merry Christmas and a lovely and magical holiday season! May your New Year be bright, and remember to spend time with the people in your life whom you love and cherish! I will be popping back online to share a New Year post with you at the beginning of January, and then I won't be back until after my baby is born - very exciting! Wish me luck, guys...I'm going to need it. Labor and delivery are not something that I'm looking forward to, and although women have been doing it for thousands of years...it's different when it's YOU! *wink* I would appreciate kind thoughts and prayers.

Merry Christmas!

“Who’s that, mom?” Molly whispered.
“That’s Mary Anne,” her mother softly answered. “She’s the resident I’m worried about.”
“Are we going to go visit with her?”
“We certainly are. Let’s go see if we can talk her into joining us at the party in the common room.”
Molly nodded as she walked with her mom to the woman’s door. Angelica tapped on the doorframe and spoke gently, trying to get her attention. “Hello, Mary Anne, it’s Angelica. I was wondering if my daughter, Molly and I could come in and visit with you.” When she didn’t answer, Molly’s mom took the initiative to enter, walking to Mary Anne’s side. Dollop wiggled in her arms as if ready to run loose, but her mom kept the dog secure, quietly shushing her while stroking her ears.
While her mom kept talking, trying to encourage Mary Anne to join everyone, Molly took a moment to look around the woman’s room. It felt cozy and smelled like roses. There were a few pictures on the wall and small figurines on a table. A bookcase sat near the window, piled with what Molly thought looked like old books. One in particular caught her attention due to its vibrant green cover and an old fashioned picture of four ladies on the front.  It was “Little Women” by Louisa M. Alcott. Molly smiled, remembering the movie she and Joelle had just watched the night before, enjoying the story.
Just as she took a step closer to the books, Molly halted when Dollop let out a whine.
“I’m so sorry,” Angelica started. “I think I better get this little one outside for a moment.  Mary Anne, would you like to walk with us?”
“No, thank you, dear,” the woman answered, barely being heard.
“Okay. How about if Molly stayed and kept you company for a moment?”
Molly whipped her head around to look at her mom, suddenly nervous at the thought of being alone with a stranger. But her mom gave her a wink and a reassuring rub on the back. “I’ll just be a few moments.” Obviously her mom thought it’d be okay, so Molly felt certain she’d be fine. She just wasn’t sure what she should do, being more on the shy side; unlike Joelle, who could talk to just about anyone.
Molly watched her mom walk out the door before turning to look at Mary Anne who continued to silently rock in her chair. Looking closer at the woman, she took in her features of pure white hair nearly curled tight on her head. Delicate glasses rested on her small face. She was dressed nicely in brown slacks and a cream sweater along with brown loafers on her feet. Her pale hands were crossed in her lap, and Molly could see a simple gold band on her left hand.
As the silence drew out, Molly felt the need to say something. “You must like to read,” she started softly. “Your books are pretty.” She instantly cringed, wondering if Mary Anne would think she sounded silly for calling the books pretty. “Are those your favorites? They must be if you keep them. My sister, Joelle, and I just watched the movie “Little Women” last night. It’s a good story.”
“Movies are nothing compared to the book,” Mary Anne answered; her words soft, not unkind. She then turned to look at Molly, bright blue eyes shining behind her glasses. “I’ve read every one of those books many times over, and every time I find something new to appreciate in them”
“Really?” Molly asked in wonder. She couldn’t imagine reading the same book more than once. She’d never read anything that interested her enough to read twice, seeing as she could barely get through her reading assignments in school.
Mary Anne nodded. “Why don’t you open that book and see for yourself?” A smile transformed her face, making her eyes light up even more.
“O-Okay,” Molly said. She reached for the green book just the woman offered her to sit in the chair opposite of her. Molly took a seat and ran her hands over the cover, feeling the texture of the ridges and impressions. She then opened it, light swiping her fingers across the aging pages. She turned to the first chapter, and began reading aloud. “Christmas won’t be Christmas without any presents,” grumbled Jo, lying on the rug.
After reading several paragraphs, Molly looked up to see Mary Anne smiling at her, which instantly made her smile in return. She returned to reading, unaware that her mother had been standing in the doorway. Angelica also smiled before walking away, knowing that all was well.
About the Author
Wife, mother, former U. S. Army, and dental hygienist, I can now add published author to the list. I’m slowly transitioning out of hygiene, hoping to make writing a full-time endeavor. After writing for many years, my publishing dreams came true in August of 2017 with the release of my debut contemporary romance, “Keyed Up”. Since then, I’ve had the fortune to work with several publishers, and as of June 4th, my eighth title will release.
I write in a variety of romance subgenres: contemporary, comedy, and erotic, with stories containing suspense and small-town romance in the works. I’m constantly learning, loving the journey, and all the amazing people I’m meeting. A voracious reader myself, I strive to put out stories I can be proud of and enjoyed by many.
I grew up on the East Coast and now reside on the West Coast, having lived in FL, GA, SC, MA, ID, and WA. Hubby and I hope to fill our passports with stamps from Scotland and Fiji, to name a few destinations. In the meantime, we’ll enjoy the beauty of the PNW.
