Retribution: Character Guest Post by Amy Thompson

You may remember Amy Thompson. Several months ago, Writing Belle featured her novel, Retribution. These days, her new adult tale is getting a snazzy new cover (see left), and Amy swung by today to treat us to a glimpse into the world of Retribution via her male lead, Colter.

Retribution from Colter’s Point of View

What is there to say about a world that took everything from me? A lost soul, ha, so they say. No, what I really am is cheated. My name is Colter Hayes and this is my story.
I had a perfect life. I was engaged, my brother was my best friend, and I was finally going to start my life. That is until I died. I was young, barely 22. I don’t remember what happened from the time I died to the time I ended up in front of this Council. It was so confusing. They all were so loud and talking over one another. Some were bathed in halos of light, while others were darkened in the shadows and they were all arguing about me. The realization, my reality, slammed into me then. What they were talking about, was my life, weighing my pros and cons, judging me without ever speaking a word to me. Who gave them the right to judge me?

I didn’t even have time to defend myself or be angry, and didn’t I have the right to be? I didn’t get a say. I wasn’t even given a chance. My choice was taken away from me, my afterlife stolen, and in its place a deal was made. Yeah, like a deal would make up for the fact that I was now branded as a lost soul and cursed for the rest of my reincarnated eternity. At least I know who I can blame, who I can take it out on… Agro.
He called it retribution and now because of it I have no choice, but to work with this group of Collectors to find lost souls. I’m stuck working with two kids, Kaiden and Devon, but thank the Council for also sending me Finn. Kaiden’s arrogant and overly confident in everything he does, in other words, he annoys the Hell out of me. Devon’s better, but still has the attention span of a teenage boy. Kaiden and Devon together are enough to drive me up the wall. I wouldn’t make it if it weren’t for Finn. He’s my side-kick and confidant, not to mention I would have bled out at least 12 different times had Finn not stitched me up. Finn knows almost everything about me.

Now on top of all this and having to babysitting the boys, I have to deal with little Miss Princess, Regan Edison. In my world, a world that ordinary people luckily know nothing about, death is not the biggest fear… it’s what happens after. What does a spoiled college freshman have to do with the real grim reapers? We have no clue. It’s not like the Council tells us anything. We get a name and a location and bam… we’re off on another mission. This was no exception. Regan... I mean the target was just another mission. Agro wanted the girl and we were sent to stop him. That’s it! It was that simple.
At first it was just keeping watch and keeping my distance from her while maintaining her safety, but then it was finding ways to speak to her and bumping into her. She fell into my life and every time I tried to push her out, she clawed her way back in with that attitude of hers and smart mouth. I liked it, even as I repelled it with the very nature of my retribution.

Now, I don’t know what to think and now I need to know why Agro is after her. Why is Regan so important? Why would the Council send us on this mission with no information? And why is Regan always looking so hot on my case? I’m protecting her for Heaven’s sake.
All I know is that I hope I can pull this off and save her from a fate worse than death, and
trust me I would know!
Retribution Synopsis
Regan Edison has just moved from California, to enter her first year at Georgia Liberty College, the place where jacked up Chevy trucks and hunting are a way of life. Regan hopes to start a new life for herself and she thinks that Georgia is just the place to do it. That is until she meets an unexpected stranger.
Colter Hayes is a member of the Collectors, a group of wrongfully punished lost souls. Colter and the rest of his team, Finn, Kaiden and Devon, work for the Requiem Council who pass judgment on those souls that are neither tagged for Heaven nor Hell. The Council has charged the Collectors with finding the lost in exchange for a chance at redemption.
When an ex-councilmember known to pass Retribution on lost souls sets his sights on Regan, the Requiem Council dispatches the Collectors to Georgia to work as protectors for Regan. The Collectors must fight to save Regan from a fate they know all too well, but can they work to earn back their chance at redemption or are their fates sealed forever?
Who is meant for Heaven?
Who is meant for Hell?
And who is just lost?
