AFTERMATH - Dystopian Science-Fiction by Tom Lewis

Title: Aftermath
Author: Tom Lewis
Publication Date: Now Available on Amazon!
Genre: Dystopian Science Fiction

Synopsis:

The end of the world came fast. Shockingly fast. Between the time the warning had sounded on the TV, till when sixteen-year-old Paige O’Connor awakened sometime later, civilization had been crushed.

The attacks had come by “them” – those things in the ships in the sky that had appeared suddenly, and without warning.

And as Paige would soon discover, the attacks had only been the beginning – those things had plans for the survivors.

Aftermath tells the story of one girl’s struggle for survival in the increasingly hostile wake of civilization’s collapse, and humanity’s domination by an alien race of beings.

Q&A with the Author

Tell us about your debut novel!
The book’s called “Aftermath”.  It’s a fast-paced, dystopian sci fi actioner that follows a teenage girl’s struggles for survival in the increasingly hostile wake of civilization’s collapse, and humanity’s domination by an alien race of beings.  I’m calling it a “Hunger Games” with aliens.

How did you get into writing?
Here’s my bio:  I was a Marine for four years, before heading off to college, and then law school.  I currently practice law as an entertainment attorney, negotiating and drafting contracts for movies.  That’s my “day job.”

I got into law as a way to segue into filmmaking.  I’ve written several scripts, and have had several options, and writing gigs.  I’m also finishing post-production on a feature film I wrote, directed, and produced.  It’s a supernatural horror called “The Channel.”  The story’s about a teenage girl, who after surviving a near-death experience in a car crash, finds herself haunted by a shadowy figure she sees from the corner of her eye… something that followed her back from the other side of death.

Where did your interest in post-apocalyptic and dystopian fiction come from?
My first exposure to the dystopian genre came about 4 years ago, when I was negotiating movie rights to a best-selling novel for one of my clients.  I read that novel, and then read the “Hunger Games” trilogy, and then I was hooked.  Dystopian, YA, NA, sci fi action, survival, and post-apocalyptic stories are far and away my favorites.

Where did the inspiration for Aftermath derive from?
I came up with the idea for Aftermath about a year ago.  Some friends and I shot it as a short film, and it went on to win 2 festivals.  I was thinking about fleshing it out into a screenplay, but then I started reading your Collapse series and your Zero series. I was so captivated by the way you brought Cassidy’s world to life, that I realized I wanted to bring the world of Aftermath to life like that for readers.  It was just a really cool story, with this amazing 16 year old heroine, that was just screaming in my head to be told.  So in February of this year I sat down and started writing it, and just published it to Kindle this past weekend.  It’s my first novel, and I’m officially hooked to the writing process!

What's next for you?
I just started outlining the story for the second book in the series (in between drafting contracts for clients), and already have most of the plot points worked out.  My goal is to get started on the writing this weekend.

About Tom Lewis
Tom Lewis grew up in Phoenix, Arizona, where his family still resides.  He served in the Marines, before returning to Arizona, where he attended Arizona State University, receiving his BS in Business Management.  After ASU, he moved to San Diego, where he attended law school at the University of San Diego.  He graduated in 1996, and was admitted to the State Bar of California the same year.

Tom wrote his first screenplay in 1999, which led to his first option.  Shortly after that, he moved to Santa Monica, where he has resided ever since.  He has a practice in the field of entertainment law.

A second screenplay Tom wrote also resulted in an option, and several writing assignments.  When the option for that screenplay expired, Tom and several friends produced an ultra-low budget version of the film, which was later picked up by Lions Gate.

Tom is currently in post-production on a second film – a supernatural thriller called “The Channel.”

In the Spring of 2014, Tom wrote a sci fi short script called “Aftermath,” which chronicled the unfolding of an alien apocalypse.  Tom and several friends turned the script into a short film, which went on to win “Best of” awards at two film festivals.

In February of 2015, Tom expanded on the story in Aftermath, turning it into his first novel.  The story follows its 16-year-old heroine’s struggles to survive in the aftermath of civilization’s collapse in an alien attack, and humanity’s domination by those aliens.

Aftermath is the first novel in a series called “The Fall.”

Tom’s favorite genres are young adult, new adult, dystopian, science fiction, post-apocalyptic, survival, and horror.
