I love autumn! It's the perfect, gentle Segway into the colder winter months. In the Central Valley of California, it doesn't really cool off until Halloween. Case in point: 90-degree temperatures here aren't really off the menu until at least the end of next week. At the very least, the evenings and mornings are longer and cooler, which makes it more tolerable. Where I live, I am impatiently awaiting the first rain of the season so that we can clear this hideous smoke out of the valley and I can breathe without inhaling ash and choking on it. The frustrating thing about all of this is that the Central Valley is actually a beautiful place to live, but you wouldn't know it most of the time anymore because of these massive, annual fires we keep having. We live right at the base of the gorgeous Sierra Nevada Mountains, have beautiful blue skies, and boast access to every type of environmentally diverse region you can think of (from the Mojave Desert and the Joshua Tree National Forest or the California coastline), but here we are, diverged within layers of smoke...again.
In light of the fact that my life in California has been submerged in shades of gray and ash for months now, I really have been trying to find the positives in this year. The way I see it, you can either look at all of the negatives of 2020 and lament it, or you can look at the positives. I talked about this in a previous article a couple of weeks ago, and for the most part, I actually believe that 2020 has had a positive impact on me rather than a negative one, drawing me closer to my family and the Lord.

If you are like me, Autumn and Winter are actually the two seasons where I do the most reading. Obviously this is because it's cold or wet outside, and it's so fun and cozy to curl up with a hot cup of tea or coffee and dive into a good novel. I talked previously about how I really couldn't read for the last year or so, due to what I like to call "Newborn Baby Fatigue Syndrome," but this year, my child usually sleeps like a champ (can I get a 'woot woot' for sleep training??), which means I sleep better, too. It also means that I have a few hours at night to read again, and I've been rabidly consuming every moment I can on my Kindle, from fantasy adventure novels to non-fiction Bible studies. And guess what? The more I read, the more I want to write! Interesting how that happens, right?
