Writing Horror With a Pulse
By Meagan Noel Hart

Whenever I assign Stephen King, I assign his short story “The Last Rung on the Ladder.” In the story, Larry remembers in vivid detail the day, decades ago, that he both endangered and saved his sister’s life. It’s a beautifully detailed scene where Kitty hangs from a broken barn ladder and a fretful Larry rushes to lay down hay to cushion her fall. Since growing up, they’ve fallen out of touch with one another. The story ends by revealing that Kitty has committed suicide. Two weeks after her death, Larry receives the following letter:

“I’ve been thinking about it a lot lately,” Kitty writes, “and what I've decided is that it would have been better for me if that last rung had broken before you could put the hay down.” Or in other words, I wish I’d never been saved at all.

There is a lot to say about this story, but the first thing my students turn to is the deep emotional rush at the story’s completion and the sudden need to call their families. After that, there is usually some kind of comment of surprise. “Wait, isn’t this the guy that wrote It?” Yes, and The Shining, and Misery, and Cujo, and Carrie. King is an extremely prolific writer, but there is no question that his best-known works are those of supernatural horror. The question my students really mean to ask is -- how could someone who writes horror also write something like this?

This question actually gets to an inherent misunderstanding about writing horror.

While what might stand out to us about the scariest of stories are the building suspense, the jump scenes, an unforgettable monstrosity, and a lot of running in the dark, the truth is that good horror also has to have heart, and it has to tug, often indirectly, at the most internal and human struggles within.

We fear the dark because we fear the unknown. We fear possession because we fear that those we love may not be who we think they are, or we fear losing control of ourselves. We fear poltergeists because we fear that what is ours--the places we should feel most at home-- don’t really belong to us. We fear slasher films because we fear we live in a society where such violence happens everyday and there is no way to stop it. We fear zombies because they challenge our understanding of life and science, and we indulge in them because they allow us to live in a world without the stresses of school, work, social obligation, and debt.

My favorite modern monsters are the weeping angels of the Doctor Who series. Angelically gorgeous statutes that can’t move while you’re looking at them, but which spring to gruesome life the second no one is looking, moving faster than imaginable. If they catch you, then they steal you away to another time and place, feeding on all your lost potential. I mean, can you think of a single better metaphor for the sudden passing of time itself?

While some would write horror off as mere genre fiction, easy scares, shallow characters, and plots with nagging holes like “if the aliens can’t touch water why would they come to Earth naked?” -- the truth is, good horror isn’t really about the monster. The monster, if anything, makes the story palpable. It is something that can be fought, defeated, sorted out. We get a rush from facing and conquering our fears. Even if the characters do not survive, we do. And those last minute scenes of the hand popping out of the dirt or a hint that the monster isn’t really defeated are so effective because we know the real fear can never really die.

Horror can even be crafted directly around exaggerated, dreaded social challenges. Like the SAW films. People don’t linger on the ridiculous puppet riding a bicycle. What eats at them are the morally preposterous positions the victims are put into. In order to save yourself and your boyfriend, do you kill the girl he cheated with? Or do you let him die so the two people he wronged can live? Can you even trust your fellow victims?

Ultimately, to write good horror, you have to tap into something much more human and banal than monsters: our primal fears, worries, concerns, and all those unanswered questions that haunt us in the night. Do they really love me? Am I an imposter? Without all those nagging social obligations and rules, would I survive? Could I save my family?

And, you have to let this connection happen naturally. Like all good ideas, and arguably all good metaphors, you need to trust your subconscious to take you somewhere meaningful, allowing the words and ideas to flow without judgement, and only after it is finished -- trust the conscious editor within to take the reins and make it pretty.

While there are many questions you can ask as you edit your horror story -- How do I build suspense? Are my characters well developed? Should I kill them anyway? Is the language here too vivid or gruesome?  -- none of them are going to matter if you didn’t ask the first, most important question, before you started writing:

What scares you?

And remember, it’s not really the clown.

MONTH OF HORROR VOL. 5: (DANCE ON FIRE) INFERNAL, BY JAMES GARCIA JR.

Title: Infernal
Genre: Edgy Vampire Crossover
Author: James Garcia Jr.
Release: Available NOW

Synopsis:

The Devil is alive and well.

The vampire Nathaniel lives in the mountains of Oregon, seeking God and keeping a watchful eye on his friends and extended family, and keenly aware of this fact, having met Satan once before in the flesh.

Robbie and Rebekah Lopez are special, and have been since that fateful night Nathaniel saved them from another vampire. As teens, they should be concerned with only their studies, interests and friends. However, they know they are marked, and must be ready for any threat. To do so, they keep constant contact with Nathaniel as they watch over their parents, Michael and Barbara; brother Jerod; and Aunt Vanessa and her daughter Grace. They are all that is left.

They have yet to meet the Devil, but soon will.

It is Satan who has orchestrated the destruction and ruin brought upon them from the very beginning. And he’s not done. He has been setting the stage for his ultimate revenge. At long last, the devil will step out of the darkness and the shadows, with an army of vampires and an infernal plot to finish Nathaniel off for good.

And anyone who stands with him.

James Garcia Jr. is a local author where I live in California (he resides in the neighboring town of Kingsburg, just a hop, skip and a jump away from my own hometown). He has written a series of edgy vampire novels that features its own unique style and its own surprising twists.

[Microphone; Master Bedroom; 1:18 am; April 12, 2016]
Nathaniel: (In a whisper) Wake up, James.
Me: [unintelligible] That’s cold! I hate it when you do that.
Nathaniel: Yes, I know. Luis doesn’t like it either. Your neck is all that is not under the covers and the easiest to get to. Follow me.
[South Hallway Cam]
Me: Yes, but you do that on purpose.
Nathaniel: True.
Me: Haven’t you fed yet?
Nathaniel: Why do people ask me this? Do you wish to know the details of my feeding?
[North Great Room Cam]
Me: Yeah, no. Never mind.
Nathaniel: Are you quite certain? I have left what remains on your doorstep.
Me: Ugh! Just like a cat, huh? I see your sense of humor is improving.
Nathaniel: I blame Luis.
Me: I’m sure you do. How is Luis?

Nathaniel: Luis is well. We speak daily.
Me: Cell phone?
Nathaniel: How else? Now, you wished to see me…
Me: Well, yes, but you didn’t have to come in the middle of the night.
Nathaniel: It is morning.
Me: Not for me.
Nathaniel: Ah. What time would you have preferred? 3 pm?
Me: Good point. I didn’t realize you were in town.
Nathaniel: No one does. Since the events of your most recent literary masterpiece on the matter; however, I have decided to keep a closer eye on things here. [Here his tone is biting, no pun intended. He would prefer that I didn’t document these events].

Me: Well, that’s good.
Nathaniel: Is it?
Me: Of course.
Nathaniel: Why? Does this give you fodder for further books? [See what I mean?]
Me: Nathaniel, it’s not like that.
Nathaniel: No?

Me: No! I write the stories to explain your side of things.
Nathaniel: Some things are best left untold, James…
Me: Like what? Aliens? JFK? Secret societies? Vampires?
Nathaniel: Especially vampires.
Me: Don’t you think it’s good that people realize there are some good vampires in the world? One day they’ll discover you’re real, right?
Nathaniel: Are there good vampires in the world? Are there really? Surely you know the stories, although that does not prevent you from employing creative license in the telling of these tales of yours.
Me: Oh? So you don’t think I have the events correctly?
Nathaniel: I did not come here to quibble with you about these silly books you write. I only came to see what you wanted. We have a nice relationship, you and I. Let us not sour it with ridiculous arguments that serve no purpose. Now, what did you wish to discuss with me?
Me: How is Barbara?
Nathaniel: She is well… I hear she is well.
Me: You haven’t seen her?
Nathaniel: I trust you did not ask me here to inquire about someone you could have visited yourself in ten minutes. I have traveled a great distance for you, James.
Me: The kids told you she’s fine?

Nathaniel: Do not let them hear you refer to them as “the kids”. Much especially Rebekah.
Me: Duly noted. I believe you've already answered my question.
Nathaniel: Which was what exactly?
Me: I was curious what you thought of the last book. Now I know. You clearly don't like them.
Nathaniel: The Point of the Flash?
Me: (Loudly) “Flash Point!”
Nathaniel: You will awaken your wife.
Me: (Lowered Voice) Right. And, no, that was book two. The latest was “Infernal.”
Nathaniel: (Grins) Yes, I know. That was a joke. Luis believes I am improving as well.
Me: I think I liked it better when you didn’t understand humor.
Nathaniel: James, I am sure your novels are fine. Have I seen them? Yes, I have. Have I read them? A little. I believe ‘skimmed’ is the operative word. I try and read the Bible only at this point. I have read a great many books in my lifetime, and have enjoyed them. What I need now more than anything, however, is the book that gives not pleasure, but life. I need this very much.
Me: I see. I wish you well with that, Nathaniel.
Nathaniel: Thank you. If I may ask, where is your Bible, James?

Me: In the library.
Nathaniel: Bottom left shelf, is that right?
Me: Yes.
Nathaniel: There are two there.
Me: That sounds right.
Nathaniel: Covered in dust.
Me: Sadly, I think’s that’s right.
Nathaniel: You know it is.
Me: Yeah.
Nathaniel: Good night, James.
Me: Good night, Nathaniel. I apologize for bothering you.
Nathaniel: It was no bother.
Me: Nathaniel?
Nathaniel: Yes?
Me: What’s going to happen?
Nathaniel: I do not know.
Me: Is he gone for good? The Devil? Lucifer?

Nathaniel: I know who you meant. And, no. I do not believe he will give up so easily.
Me: And the vampires that are against you?
Nathaniel: They will not give up so easily either. And to answer your other question: Yes, one day they will discover that we have been real the entire time. I fear it. Goodnight.

RESURRECTION: SHADOWS OF OMEGA (Resurrection #1)

Title: Resurrection: Shadows of Omega
Series: Resurrection #1
Genre: Post-Apocalyptic Thriller/Survival
Author: Summer Lane
Release Date: January 26, 2018
(also holla to my friend Steven Catizone for always collaborating with me and creating amazing covers for Cassidy Hart!)

Synopsis

The war is over. At last, Omega has been defeated, and the militias have found peace and stability. General Cassidy Hart has been elected to lead the newly resurrected post-apocalyptic government as President of the Western Republic.
The world is a different place. From the ashes, structure emerges. From death, hope blossoms.

Yet the shadows of Omega remain. Omega loyalists and dangerous anarchists infect every level of the crestfallen civilization, threatening to undermine the Republic’s attempts to maintain peace. Most of the world’s population has been slain: those who remain alive have very different ideas about what must be done to continue to survive.

A seasoned war veteran, sniper, and leader, Cassidy resents the stifling role of presidential leadership. General Chris Young, her former fiancé, leads the United Militia’s military as it rebuilds. Her comrades from war have scattered, and the one person who understands her, truly and completely, has disappeared.

When a new threat emerges, one that could undo everything they have fought for, Cassidy is forced to make hard decisions and ask for help in places where she never imagined she could.

The old is gone. The new has come.
Welcome to the Hart Presidency. Welcome to the Western Republic.
The Resurrection has begun.

From prolific author Summer Lane, creator of the #1 bestselling smash-hit Collapse Series, Zero Trilogy, Bravo Saga, Unbreakable SEAL and Running with Wolves. Enjoy this new series, following the adventures of beloved heroine Cassidy Hart, along with some familiar faces that fans have come to know and love.

ARE YOU READY?
The honest truth is that I've had the story line of Cassidy Hart in my head since I was about 13 years-old. I wrote a series of books using a stack of wide-ruled notebooks. The main character's name was "Cadey," and she was a young woman who went from being an average survivor to a senator, and then a president. Granted, the original setting of this novel was in space, because it was science fiction (I was 13, and I didn't know how to set such a story on earth - that was before the idea of a post-apocalyptic tale sprang into my head). The general idea was there, however, and it was a strong seed of inspiration.

Over the years, I rewrote that same type of story over and over again - Cassidy had many names before she finally evolved into what she is now. In essence, Cassidy has been a work in progress for 11 years. The last five have shaped and molded her character ( and myself! ), and I think the next few years will continue to grow her, too.

This series - the story of the resurrection of a fallen society and the fight of survivors to keep the enemy from rising again - is the culmination, I believe, of my career as a writer. It's a test of not just myself, but the test of the lasting power of my characters. I am not the kind of author who writes a story just for kicks. I'm the kind of author who writes a story because it's fiercely clawing its way out of me, and because it's real, raw, gritty, and completely necessary to the development of the character that I'm writing about. These types of stories are the ones I can't possibly keep to myself. They're the ones that are extremely special. They're the ones that readers really love to read about.

Cassidy Hart is my hero. I've said that many times over the years, because it's such a pure and true statement. Cassidy does the right thing. She stands up for herself and for the people she loves. She's learned to  never back down and never take crap from anyone. She's fierce and fun and tough and admirable. I love her - and this new series is going to be one heck of a rockin' rollercoaster thrill ride. I cannot wait to share it with you in January 2018.

BUT STAY TUNED.

I have some surprises in store. If you're a fan of the Collapse Series, Cassidy Hart, Uriah True, or any other of the major characters in the Collapse universe, I have something fun and unexpected lurking just around the corner.

Keep checking back on Writing Belle until the end of the year. Keep an eye on your email inboxes (if you're subscribed through my website!). Watch Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.

I have something really cool coming up. You won't want to miss it.
It's totally top secret, and I promise you'll be surprised!!

Until next time....THANK YOU for your readership, and I can't wait to launch Resurrection: Shadows of Omega!

About Susanne Leist (from Amazon.com)
I have always loved to read. I grew up with Agatha Christie, Alistair Maclean and so many other authors who filled my imagination with intrigue and mystery. The TV show, Murder She Wrote, kept me entertained when I was not reading late into the night.
Over the years, my taste in books has expanded to include the supernatural and paranormal genres as reflected in my selection of shows, such as Supernatural, The Vampire Diaries, and The Originals.
My first book, The Dead Game, is a paranormal suspense/mystery. It brings fantasy and the surreal to the simple murder mystery. It has dead bodies and suspects. However, it also has vampires, vampire derivatives, and a touch of romance to spice up the mix.
